I believe a student learns best "by, when, and with" a person who knows what learning science means and how it happens. I believe my role as a science teacher is one of being responsible for providing content and materials motivating a student and to be there for support. As a science teacher, I believe I can inform my students and parents which in turn is a benefit to our community and environment. I will teach students the basics of science regarding the TEKS at their appropriate grade level and teach them about being a good steward to our earth. I will do this by discussing current events in our community, country and world. The students will gain confidence to bring into discussion appropriate related happenings in their lives. As much as possible, information will be relevant to their lives and time scheduled for student input on relevant issues in which they have the most interest.
I want students to gain more than just the science knowledge from my teachings. The students will learn to be problem solvers, gain confidence, become explorers, think about questions, seek answers, and think about social commitments and how science content carries over into their lives in general. I will talk to my students about why I have specific goals for them and how each can successfully meet goals. I will create an inclusive learning science environment where differences (e.g., abilities, styles, characteristics, levels of interest) will not be a negative factor for any student. Student-centerdness is my teaching style because learning science will take place as students feel safe, accepted and appreciated for effort as well as academic successes. I will focus on "what and why" I believe about teaching science and "how" I will put it into action to best benefit students. This is another reason why teaching science is so important to me and what I enjoy.
My preparation to become a teacher of science is as extensive as most teachers in their areas of expertise and shows my commitment to providing and improving the quality of middle school teaching of science. My philosophy includes students being active participants. I believe middle school students will require me to be a giver of knowledge, a guide, supporter, and a step-by-step project leader.
